ACOUSTIC INSPECTION

LRWRA is responsible for maintaining 1,400 miles of public sewer mains and 35,897 manholes or access points. To do so, LRWRA leverages a cost-effective technology known as the sewer line rapid assessment tool, which uses sound waves to quickly assess the flowing conditions of a sewer pipe, hence the term acoustic inspection. This method has proven to be useful in helping prioritize maintenance needs, while allowing for an efficient allocation of utility resources.

ACOUSTIC INSPECTION

WHAT TO EXPECT:

You will see LRWRA employees and vehicles which are clearly marked working at manholes in your neighborhood. Sound waves will be sent from a transmitter in one manhole to a receiver in a nearby manhole using a Sewer Line Rapid Assessment Tool, used to assess any blockages in the line. The sound waves can be heard outside the manhole; but, are not loud or disruptive. If a manhole is located on your property, the crews may need to access the manhole; but, will not need to enter your home. The actual test will take about five minutes and traffic interruptions will be minimal.

WHY?

To efficiently maintain the small diameter sewer system (approx. 1,200 miles of pipes 12″ in diameter or less), LRWRA’s goal is to complete an annual preventive inspection on all these public mains. The inspection process will help us identify and proactively address the portions of the sewer system that are prone to blockages, such as grease, roots, and debris buildup. Based on the results of these inspections, the next steps in the maintenance cycle, such as cleaning prioritization, CCTV inspection, and ultimately, repairs or replacement, are outlined.
